Multiple myeloma is a plasma cell neoplasm is characterized by malignant transformation and clonal expansion of mature plasma cells, which results in overproduction of monoclonal proteins. Treatment goals are centered on detection of progressive disease and adverse events.

Oncologic emergencies that may arise due to adverse events include myelosuppression, with anemia being the most common (97%); hypercalcemia; spinal cord compression; and acute renal failure.
